Don’t let the apparent absurdity of the name fool you: Mykki Blanco’s choice of “Gay Dog Food” is likely more a commentary on her aversion to labels than anything else. And how strong that aversion must be that she’s using the project, not as a springboard into scientific research on dog food as a potential aphrodisiac, but as an outlet for matured artistry. As she remarked herself with nary a hint of an ironic smile: “Gay Dog Food is just the start of where I hope to go creatively and commercially, this moment now is really the beginning.” And who are we to disagree, given that her debut LP isn’t set for release until some time next year? Consider all these international tours and stuff (and Fem Slick) just a precursor!
Meanwhile, Gay Dog Food will make its debut via UNO NYC on October 28. The inimitable Gobby is billed as an executive producer on the mixtape (supplementing less executive work from Sasha DZA and Supreme Cuts), while the riotous Kathleen Hanna actually has her very own chopped spoken word track, intimately titled “A Moment with Kathleen.” Per a press release, Hanna has been a huge musical influence on Blanco, and Gay Dog Food marks their very first time collaborating.
