Angolan producer Nazar, whose track “Konvoy” was recently featured on the sprawling Fabriclive 100 mix compiled by Kode 9 and Burial, has announced the release date of his debut EP for Kode 9’s own Hyperdub. Enclave is coming out digitally on November 18 (with vinyl to follow), and its title track is available now to stream.
Enclave’s “weaponized” sound, which reimagines the Angolan upbeat dance genre kuduro through the lens of cold and noisy, violent electronica (Nazar calls it “rough kuduro”), is inextricably linked to the EP’s origin story and Nazar’s very own background. After moving back to his motherland from Belgium, where the producer was raised, he embarked on a quest to get to know his origins and “express [his] frustrations with what [he] seeing on a daily basis” through music. On Enclave, he attempts to come to terms with Angola’s bloody 27-year civil war, its politically repressive aftermath, and the “hope, resilience and pride” that have been present with the Angolan people throughout it all.
