If experienced guitarists had their own cabal, I bet one of the very first things they’d do (after they finished practicing their guitar scales for the day) is start shooting propaganda films with the goal of making audiences appreciate the spiritual power of that classic stringed instrument…which would ultimately lead to friendly legislation mandating the worship of an omnipotent guitar god (a.k.a. “Fret-alia”).
The plot of one of these films would go something like this: a teenager aspiring to be a guitarist experiences great frustration learning the basics, not to mention attempting to play an entire song, and pretty soon his or her efforts are all for naught anyway due to a rare and an inexplicable disease that results in a gradual state of unconsciousness. The protagonist blacks out spontaneously and with greater frequency, until eventually, he or she is mentally absent from the world 24/7. The solution that said-teenager’s parents and friends come up with after desperately exhausting mere theoretical, medical alleviations? Rolling that hospital bed-laden kid into a Noveller/Wire show!
Noveller a.k.a. Sarah Lipstate makes no attempts to hide her ongoing guitar obsession; and earlier this year, she released her latest album A Pink Sunset for No One. And soon, she’ll up the ante even further by joining forces with legendary post-punk ax-shredders Wire for an imminent September tour (oh, and Xiu Xiu are also supporting Noveller for one of the shows!) I can’t really comment on Wire’s recent albums personally, but the enduring post-punk outfit certainly tended to emphasize the stringed instrument’s brasher side on what we now consider their classic releases from the late 1970s.
Will their efforts in conjunction be enough to revive poor Pubert? Keep your guitar-calloused fingers crossed!
