Being part of a high-profile band’s rhythm section must be a bit of a double-edged sword. Especially if you’re trying to forge your own path with a solo project. Philip Selway’s put out two records as a singer-songwriter, including last year’s Weatherhouse, but unless things really start to pop off, he’ll forever be best known as the drummer for Radiohead. That’s probably good for exposure, but probably a little annoying when you’re trying to play a show and people keep yelling “Play the drum part from Karma Police! Just the drums! Just you up there playing the drums for 4 minutes and 21 seconds! I’ll come up and do my Thom Yorke impression if that helps! Here, check it out, Karmaaaaa—”
So, yeah, when Philip Selway comes to the United States in April, don’t do that. Just listen to his songs. Unless you have a favorite off his albums, then, sure, feel free to yell that out. For each of Selway’s headlining dates, he’ll be joined by Adem (of Fridge fame), who will both open and play in the headliner’s band. Selway will also be playing both weekends of Coachella. Adem will still be there, playing with Phil onstage, but the rest of the time, he’ll have to stay in the car.
