“Welcome to the Great Game,” she initially said, and I half-expected JLaw as Katniss to come barreling in from her fictional futuristic world through a portal suddenly nearest to my listening location. Her presence would be a surprise, but the opening of a wormhole would not, as Rabit and Chino Amobi’s The Great Game: Freedom From Mental Poisoning, #33 on our 2015 list, is essentially an atemporal trip through esoterica. The samples of gunshots and what sound like newscasts (plus the notion of being “free from mental poisoning”) make you think that there’s an ultimate social commentary to be found here, and kudos to those who are truly up to the task. Otherwise, holy shit, is that really what underwear is going to look like in the year 2142?!
The digital version came out (free of charge, by the way) last August, which you may or may not have missed. If you didn’t miss it and now feel the need to pay physical homage to this warped and intense mix, Boomkat has a very limited-edition cassette version out right now. You may as well acknowledge and/or purchase Rabit’s 2015 album Communion while you’re at it.
