Avengers? Whatever. Skinnyhot new Spiderman? Pshaw. If you’re looking for Thrills! Do-goodery! Sweet soundtracks! And Excitement! Well, my fellow inhabitants of the real non-cartoon world, with its blissful lack of dudes flying around in spandex and its sad overabundance of villainy and bad behavior, when you need all-around heroes, look no further than Radiohead and their team. After all, when these guys aren’t making killer, innovative jams, they’re creating Artistic and Political Statements, and just generally saving the Earth through documentaries and good causes. And now, Radiohead Producer Nigel Godrich is striking out on his own with a band called Ultraísta, to win the hearts and minds of the good people of whatever non-cartoon geographical area you happen to have ears in.
While the production wizard may be best known for his continuing partnership with Radiohead, he has also worked studio magic for the likes of Beck, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Paul McCartney, Pavement, Air, and R.E.M. For Ultraista, Godrich is working with L.A.-based producer/drummer guy Joey Waronker (Beck, Elliot Smith). (Godrich and Waronker both play in Thom Yorke’s Atoms for Peace.) Ultraísta also includes London artist Laura Bettinson. No word on a full album yet, but here’s Ultraísta’s video for the track “Smalltalk”:
