Highly regarded Czech violinist and composer Josef Suk died Wednesday, July 6, after battling an undisclosed illness, Reuters reports. He was 81.
Suk was born in Prague in 1929 and is the great-grandson of famous composer Antonin Dvorak. The violinist founded the Suk Trio in 1951 and the Suk Chamber Orchestra in ‘74.
“He was the best interpreter of Dvorak’s violin concert and his chamber compositions .. .and he also won acclaim for his Mozart and Beethoven creations,” Prague Spring’s Antonin Matzner told Reuters. “His tone was distinctive among all violinists around the world and he maintained it into old age.”
