Though the event has had little impact on the American pop-cultural consciousness, the death of the pop star Stephen Gately, a singer in the Irish band Boyzone, was regarded in Britain and Ireland as a national tragedy.Mr. Gately, 33, died Saturday while visiting the Spanish island of Mallorca, The Associated Press reported. The band announced the news on its Web site, boyzone.net, on Sunday, and few details of the singer’s death have been made available. A spokesman for Mr. Gately’s family told BBC News: “There’s no foul play involved and it’s not suicide. It’s just a tragic accident is what we’ve been told.”
