According to Ayler Records, pioneering free jazz drummer Sunny Murray has died at the age of 81. Murray performed alongside such artists as Cecil Taylor, Archie Shepp, Arthur Doyle, and Albert Ayler, the latter with whom he worked extensively on records like Spiritual Unity and Spirits Rejoice. Murray was also a leader on a host of albums, such as Sonny’s Time Now and Homage to Africa.
