Rustie’s Green Language tour begins on September 18 at the Oval Space in London. He’ll make stops throughout Europe, the US, and at Red Bull Music Academy Tokyo. Shows in Krakow and Amsterdam will be part of Warp25, the label’s 25-year anniversary festival, and he’ll be playing back-to-back with countryman and kindred spirit Hudson Mohawke for two shows in France and the UK. There’s also a “special homecoming” at Glasgow School of Art. Check out the full schedule at the end of the article.
EDM bros and indie-electro dudes alike seem to love Russel Whyte. Perhaps it’s due to a self-aware garishness that some big-room DJ/producers just don’t have. Perhaps it’s the clear grime affiliation of his earlier productions. Perhaps it’s his role as a shaper of the influential Glasgow scene. Whatever it is, he’s more or less avoided the “sellout” tag pinned on many European producers experimenting with more maximalist forms by using cliche as a tool rather than a methodology. His music is a brilliant collage of tropes.
So Green Language tho: It uses bird sounds as well. Fresh. It also uses Danny Brown. Watch the video for “Attak” below, and take a listen to Rustie’s RinseFM mix featuring album collaborator D Double E, Nightwave, and Fools Gold hip-hop crew World’s Fair.
