Don’t let yourself be hurt this time…especially because this is the type of news that’s destined to uplift rather than send you into a sad or trashcan-heaving angry spiral.
August 17 will mark the date that the Sacred Bones label reissues Julee Cruise’s sophomore album The Voice of Love, alongside a brand new 12-inch entitled Three Demos, which’ll consist (natch) of three demo versions of songs that eventually went on to be featured on Cruise’s 1989 debut Floating Into the Night. The songs in question are “Floating,” “Falling,” and “The World Spins” — and, should you need a reminder despite TMT going full Twin Peaks for a week around this time last year: Cruise, director David Lynch, and composer Angelo Badalamenti were like three peas in a subtly-creepy pod when it came to Cruise’s first and second albums (“Falling,” of course, became the award-winning opening theme for Twin Peaks).
It’s also worth noting (and press on the subject does as much) that potentially none of this music would’ve happened had Lynch actually succeeded in obtaining the rights, for his 1986 film Blue Velvet, to “Song to the Siren” by This Mortal Coil (originally written by Tim Buckley). The difficulty in obtaining said rights preceded a connection with Cruise, and prior to any Twin Peaks stuff, the trio collaborated on what became the cinematically prominent track, “Mysteries of Love.” “[Sing] like an angel… ,” Lynch reportedly told Cruise in the studio.
