I’ve always sort of assumed the “mmph” was just shorthand for “millimeters per hour,” which would be incredibly slow. This is funny, because mmph (real name Sae Heum Han) makes music that is incredibly not slow. It’s very fast in fact, and so is the Seoul-via-Boston musician’s rise to prominence.
Hell, it’s barely been two months since serpentwithfeet’s eucharistic record soil, on which mmph was a key producer. Now, the “beat”-smith is rapidly following up with a new EP for Tri Angle. Serenade arrives September 7. And you don’t even have to wait one interminable second to get a taste, either; you can stream the first single “Woodlawn” below in all its blistering goodness!
Serenade is mmph’s second record for Tri Angle, and according to the label, it utilizes baroque and classical tropes to “create Wagnerian suites in miniature.” On “Woodlawn,” mmph shows that motif being fragmented through the prisms of Rustie or IGLOOGHOST, with overtly bright arrays of explosive rhythms and samples.
So hurry up! You need the winds at your back to catch up with this guy! You can start your engines by streaming “Woodlawn” below and then preordering the digital album over at Bandcamp. KA-CHOW!
