On September 16, Touch and Go will release the first album from Shellac in seven years, following 2007’s Excellent Italian Greyhound. The album was recorded at Steve Albini’s own Electrical Audio studios in Chicago, and it’s titled Dude Incredible. But before you get all excited and start high-fiving your “bros,” saying, “dude, incredible” and other hackneyed platitudes like “gnarly,” or “awesome,” or “tight,” know this: as the album’s press release asserts, “there is no comma in ‘Dude Incredible’; like Sir Duke or King Friday for example.” Seeing as this title is not some empty affirmation like the common dullards out there may assume, it could only be an homage to the legendary Dude Incredible.
What’s that? You say you’ve never heard of this legendary Dude Incredible? Well, I dare say we’re both in for a treat then: you who receives the gift of knowing just one of the great man’s multitudinous exploits, and I who enjoys the pleasure of regaling you with it. Oh what a joyous day!
Dude Incredible began his life as a humble orphan on the streets of Kentucky. He made his first fortune at the dog track, picking the pockets of spectators as they watched the races. Eventually, he amassed enough sawbucks to buy the arena and quickly converted it into the world’s first horse-racing track. People came in droves to witness this exciting innovation to the world of gambling, astounded by the ingenuity of Dude Incredible. But oh, he was just getting started. Next stop was the world of traveling entertainment, where he would genetically engineer the carny and change history forever.
But that is a story for another day, and one that will undoubtedly be best told by Shellac.
