Get your anoraks ready, boys and girls: Slumberland Records, the Oakland via Washington D.C. label that has been instrumental in popularizing indie pop in the US of A, has announced that it will celebrate its 30th anniversary by doing the most late-80s thing they can: start a subscription-based singles club!
Over the next eighteen months — culminating in the label’s actual anniversary in December 2019 — Slumberland will release a limited, members-only run of twelve 7-inch singles from such artists as Wildhoney, Pale Lights, Dolly Dream, Failed Flowers, and Odd Hope.
Actually, Slumberland has had a long tradition of keeping the vinyl single format alive: the imprint originally started as a 7-inch label and has released over 125 of those tiny saucers of wax since its inception. That number will now grow with “a pair of singles every three months by bands and artists not generally associated with Slumberland.” Subscribers can expect “exclusive color vinyl pressings, fun goodies throughout the series, and finally, a bonus single at the conclusion of the subscription,” which are all things indie pop fans generally live for. The first two records, by Australia’s Rat Columns and cult Sheffield band the Suncharms, will ship at the end of July.
Follow the link to sign up for the fesTWEEvities: it’s $100 for the whole thing, if you live in the US, that is. Also, two songs from the first drop are streaming online. Listen to them below as many times as you want (but afterwards, maybe try to get out of the house and meet some people!):
