How does a band tour and garner the success that Small Black has with just two 7-inches and an EP? I was skeptical myself the first time I saw them live with Washed Out (way back in early 2010), but those half-dozen songs went far along with their badass (=extremely chill) collaboration with Ernest Greene. And sure, I guess in these days you don’t have to have three (or even one) albums listed on discogs.com to be popular. We’ll spare you that annoying enumeration of similar band stories.
Small Black and Washed Out made the rounds just a little while ago, but now they’re playing some shows and festivals around Europe before parting ways in Paris (FYI: Washed Out are on Villette Sonique’s lineup June 6, joining Fuck Buttons, King Midas Sound, Thee Oh Sees, and a couple more; Small Black are playing June 7 with — well, you can read). Starting in July, Small Black are back in the US and touring with Beach Fossils, whose dreamy debut just came out on Captured Tracks.
Along with the tour, Small Black have announced the release of a new video (watch it at the Chocolate Grinder) for “Bad Lover.” Shop-class carpentry, sawdust and sparks, and a few homemade masks of varying levels of creepiness — what could be finer?
