When you talk Stephen Malkmus, there’s only one thing that comes to mind:
Shredding tasty guitar licks!
Oh yeah, there he is, STEPHEN.
Huh. Wonder what he’s doing here? Probably about to announce another ripper of a guitar album from Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks. Y’all heard “Shiggy” off of last year’s Jicks record Sparkle Hard? Ooooh WEE! This dude Malkmus sure knows his way around an axe. Uh… shit. Wait… what’s going on?
WHOA! Can it be? Is… is Stephen Malkmus going DiGiTaL?
Yes, we’re getting a transmission across the net now: “Groove Denied… a new solo electronic album from Stephen Malkmus… out March 15 via Matador Records.” Hey, there’s a video feed coming in too, for something called, “Viktor Borgia.” Look!
Damn, Malkmus. I didn’t know you could groove on ‘em like that! Remember when the Spurs went from being a championship-caliber team predicated on grinding defense to a championship-caliber team predicated on dynamic play-making? This is like if Tim Duncan traded in scoring moves down in the post for Ableton Live. Or something. Come summer, all the teens on break from school are going to be doing the “laid back finger gun” move in the club.
Groove Denied is out March 15 via Matador and can be pre-ordered here. It will be Stephen Malkmus’s first solo album sans Jicks since 2001. You can check out the album’s artwork — as well as Malkmus’s upcoming solo tour dates — down below. And just for the hell of it, here’s Stephen Malkmus engaging in a dance showdown with Random Businessman and Ariana (no last name given) one more time in the video for “Viktor Borgia.”
