Sub Pop offering scholarships to high school seniors, recording contracts to just about everyone else

Apparently, Seattle indie label Sub Pop is raking in so much dough these days that they’re running out of tax write-off ideas. I guess when you start makin’ the Beach House Money, you can’t just bury it in the backyard in mason jars any more. Luckily, Sub Pop’s loss is your gain… if you happen to be a high school senior… who happens to live in the states of Washington or Oregon… who is planning on attending an accredited unversity or college as a full-time student… who is involved in the creative arts in some way.

That’s right, jaded, post-college, joe-job-working, relationship-sabotaging, King of Limbs-panning TMT reader: put down the pipe and GO AND GET YOUR LITTLE BROTHER. Sub Pop wants to give him one of three scholarships — one for $6,000, one for $4,000, and one for $3,000 — for being the talented, creative, thoughtful, ambitious, and well-spoken one in the family. As I said above, you’ve got to be from Washington or Oregon, college-bound, and an up-and-coming artiste. To apply for these scholarships, all your little bro has to do is submit a one-page essay on one or more of the following topics:

• What are you doing in the arts/music field in your community?
• How and/or why did you become interested in artistic outlets?
• How would this scholarship money help you to progress in your chosen field?
• What are your influences and/or who inspires you?
• Who are some of your favorite bands or artists?

Hey, are you still listening to me? I said put the damn pipe down! Sheesh. I’m guessing your bro isn’t exactly going to be citing YOU as an inspiriation, now is he? Anyway, $6,000, $4,000, and $3,000 checks will be made payable to the university or college of the winning applicants’ choice and applied to winning applicants’ tuition. Submissions and attachments should be sent to scholarship@subpop.com or mailed to:

Let’s see, what else? The applicants are strongly encouraged to send links or hard copies of their artwork along with their essay… deadline’s May 15… more info over here… blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Okay, pass that pipe this way. I’m supposed to be at work in like 20 minutes.
