TMT news story #0078-PSY-523-F: in which we learn via Twitter that The Flaming Lips have recorded a song for forthcoming Guided by Voices comp

Boy, oh boy, what a scoop, folks! Fresh over the wires. Hot out of the oven. Dateline: the internet. Here we go: according to a shard of a Twitter post from Flaming Lips frontweirdo Wayne Coyne, he and his fellow Lips have apparently recorded a cover of the Guided By Voices track “Smothered in Hugs” (from their 1994 classic Bee Thousand).

Just to save you the time, the post reads like this: “Spent the morning recording some singing for Guided By Voices tribute record..Smothered and Hugs…” But lest we all think that “Smothered and Hugs…” is just some kind of cute sign-off, Coyne also posted a Wayne Campbell-style EXTREME CLOSE-UP (Waaaaaaaaaah!) video snippet of himself singing part of the tune into a microphone. I’ll say this: the man’s incisors and cuspids are fucking impressive.

Anyway, there’s not a lot of additional info on this comp at the moment, and no tracklist to share yet, but our bros at Pitchfork have reported that the album is currently about 80% done and will also feature a contribution from Western Civ and a collaboration from Buffalo Killers and the Breeders’ Kelley Deal. No More Fake Labels plans on releasing the thing in early 2011.

So, to recap, then: Twitter post, Guided By Voices comp, Wayne Coyne’s teeth, more info coming later. Some story, huh? Have a great day, everyone! <3 <3 <3
