Just like the rest of you, I routinely check Google for images of the next big hip-hop act to come out of Japan…and this morning, you know what I get instead of well-choreographed photos suggestive of both a seriousness and a nonchalance toward pedestrian laws in particular? FREAKIN’ MONKEYS.
“Dos Monos” does actually mean “two monkeys” in Spanish, but the fact that there are almost no photos of the Tokyo-based trio among the plethora of primate couples trying to hide their desire to claw our faces off means that aspiration is clearly on the table. The life of Dos Monos has, up until this point, been comprised of singles, festival performances, and a score for a one-off TV miniseries where they also were the stars.
Now, finally, they have their debut album Dos City all prepped for release on March 20 via Deathbomb Arc (one of our favorite labels of 2018), and the expectation is that they’ll be soon be able to fling poo with im-poo-nity the way that all famous musical groups do these days, regardless of gloves on hand. Will you happily thrust your face forward?
Pre-order the album now — and check the videos for the tracks “In 20XX” and “Clean Ya Nerves (Cleopatra)” below. There’s a cool sense of derangement that might be reminiscent of some of the more crazed rappers in the game.
