If you were to somehow coalesce the purity of Joan Baez’s folk spirit with the Saxon features and artistic temperament of a young 1960’s Nico, you’d likely end up with something eerily similar to Toronto’s Tamara Lindeman — better known by her singular stage name, The Weather Station.
Indeed, the beautiful and remarkably talented musician/actress is a one-off on a variety of levels; from her endearingly technical vocal melodies, to her relentless, unabashed supplementation of the traditional folk doctrine. Just this past week, in between an autumn bonanza of European tour dates, she found time to release the official video to “You and I (On the Other Side of the World),” which is one of the new tracks off her freshly-dropped self-titled (and self-produced) LP.
The song (as well as the video) is as much Grace Slick as it is Joni Mitchell; adventurous in its vocal and sonic endeavors, yet inherently stringent to the simple, down-home elements upon which the Canadian songwriter’s foundation is confidently built.
Lindeman herself explains that the video, which was directed by Colin Medley and shot in one afternoon at a mid-summer county fair, is just a simple love story between “two characters who are always connected, but always separate.” That’s fair enough, but given all the visuals of its county fair setting, you can practically feel the oddly-complimentary aromas of enticing funnel cake and fresh cow shit still lingering in your nostrils long after the romantic manifesto has concluded.
Lindeman will also be wrapping up her current European expedition at the end of this month, before kicking off a forthcoming North American tour with a show at L.A.’s Bootleg Theatre on November 1.
