Weezer's contract with Geffen ends, but they haven't gone indie just yet

Most love affairs eventually end. Geffen Records and Weezer have been looking all moon-eyed at each other for the past 16 years, ever since the former released the latter’s self-titled debut way back in 1994. With Weezer’s contract having ended last December, this fairytale love story seemed to have all but ended. (Personally, I give credit to Geffen for keeping it together and looking past Make Believe.) But, contrary to recent reports, the love affair isn’t over just yet. While an initial report by Billboard claimed that the group had already decided to “go independent,” an update claimed that re-signing with the label is still a possibility among a variety of other options.

However they end up releasing new music, Weezer do have a few plans on the horizon. In terms of strictly new music, the group has recorded a new song for the upcoming Shrek Forever After, which is definitely a new Shrek movie. In terms of older stuff, Weezer is compiling a collection of B-sides from throughout the group’s career for release later in the year. The band is also planning a deluxe edition of its 1996 album Pinkerton, an album some folks (like me) really like. Finally, the band has some tourdates scheduled.
