“Me and Mikey present: When Fish Ride Bicycles” - Chuck Inglish on “Delivery Man,” late 2008
Remember when The Cool Kids dropped that line hyping their forthcoming album? And you knew that they were, in fact, hyping their forthcoming album, because you had already heard that The Cool Kids were putting out an album called When Fish Ride Bicycles? I remember that, too. Perhaps 2+ years isn’t an extraordinarily long time in terms of delayed hip-hop records (though I think it’s probably beating Tha Carter III at this point), but it’s still, you know, kind of a long time. Especially when you rarely hear a word about it. Sort of leads one to think that this whole thing might never actually come out.
Jokes on me, it is actually coming out!!
While I’m still going to maintain a healthy amount of skepticism (roughly 12% of my body weight), primarily because the record still lacks a solid release date, When Fish Ride Bicycles is set for release in the spring of 2011 via Green Label Sound. As you may know, Green Label Sound is the record label of Mountain Dew. While I’ve nothing expressly against (or for) peddlers of sickeningly sweet soft drinks putting out records, it seems a missed opportunity for Huffy or whoever makes the world’s lion share of gold rope to start a record label and create the ultimate Cool Kids synergy.
To prove that the record is a thing that will exist, The Cool Kids have put out a first single by the title of “Bundle Up,” which is available at the Green Label Sound website. But we’ve been down this road before with “Delivery Man” and “Pennies,” so to sweeten the deal, the group has announced a partial list of guest appearances for the record: Bun B (yeah!), Pharrell Williams (eh!), and Asher Roth (bleh!). Other than that, there’s not a lot more to know about this album. However, The Cool Kids will be at SXSW, namely for a Green Label Sound showcase at La Zona Rosa on March 18. There you can try to ask them all the When Fish Ride Bicycles-related questions your overly inquisitive brain can dream up.
