“I once saw Kongo Iwao play the Chinese beauty Yang Kuei-fei in the No play Kotei, and I shall never forget the beauty of his hands showing ever so slightly from beneath his sleeves. As I watched his hands, I would occasionally glance down at my own hands resting on my knees. Again, and yet again, I looked back at the actor’s hands, comparing them with my own, and there was no difference between them. Yet strangely the hands of the man on the stage were indescribably beautiful, while those on my knees were but ordinary hands.

“I just want to keep putting out material, get some more CDs and tapes out there, and hopefully some coffee mugs.”
– Ahnnu

We’re probably still a ways away from Leland Jackson brand coffee mugs, but when it comes to the rest of his expressed aspirations, the artist principally known in the music world as Ahnnu (and also sometimes Cakedog) is well on his way to fulfilling his desire to fling more physical media out into the world.

Lee Noble The Hell of You Come In

[No Kings; 2017]

Rating: 3.5/5

Styles: ambient, drone
Others: Ecclesiastes 1

Impressionism in painting details, quite to the contrary of its musical correlate, the very constitution of the world — whether with Monet, who captures the confluence of eye and object in which evanescent perception is not fixed in contour but blurred between light and air, or with Cézanne, who depicts the emergence of matter

♫♪  D∆WN - “Stopwatch”

Hi, were you doing anything this weekend? Perhaps over-analyzing that one weird text message you got from the person who you went on that good second date with? Cool great news: D∆WN has you.

“Stopwatch” is the sort of effortlessly perfect track that would be a highlight for almost anybody else, but for Dawn Richard, it feels like she just woke up today and made it while brewing coffee. If you needed a song that exactly occupies the intersection of emo-empowerment anthem and banger, then get ready to make a private Spotify playlist consisting of just this track and loop. ♫♪  Chocolate Grinder Mix 123 - The World’s A Graveyard and Every Day Is Halloween

In the mob’s damning stares, the shtetl woman saw reflections of not only burning torches but also burning hypocrisy, and this the worse conflagration. It wasn’t enough that they’d spread their shameful lies to her customers. It wasn’t enough that they’d marked and ransacked her market stall. They, whose children daily enjoyed the fruits of her sister-kin’s bloody toils, now dared bring their accusations of blood libel to a part of town they’d otherwise never deign to enter and to the door of her family home?! No, not this night, she thought, not without real sacrifice.

Colleen A flame my love, a frequency

[Thrill Jockey; 2017]

Styles: synthesizer organics
Others: Vespertine, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, Gerald Durrell

And when the hour of his departure drew near—

“Ah,” said the fox, “I shall cry.”

“It is your own fault,” said the little prince. “I never wished you any sort of harm; but you wanted me to tame you…”

“Yes, that is so,” said the fox.

“But now you are going to cry!” said the little prince.

“Yes, that is so,” said the fox.

“Then it has done you no good at all!”

“It has done me good,” said the fox, “because of the color of the wheat fields.”

Blondes Warmth

[R&S; 2017]

Styles: noise, hardware, experimental techno, process
Others: Manuel Göttsching, Sol LeWitt, your boyfriend’s ambient post-rock band

The smell of a vintage paperback doused in coffee and camembert. The sound of an old man called something like “Gus” softly whistling his favorite ditty. The feeling a vole probably has upon tucking itself under a cozy fold of dirt. The final scene in Home Alone. That’s warmth: a blissful thing, an elusive thing, an almost kitschy thing typically found in fine wines and kind faces and home interiors.

Peter Ablinger & Luke Moldof Split

[Bánh Mì Verlag; 2017]

Styles: bird, piano
Others: Jürg Frey, die Reihe, Alec Sturgis, Donna Harraway, Wandelweiser

As a student of Jürg Frey, Jack Callahan follows the maestro’s paraphrased maxim “the artist’s hand is very light” in both his compositional work and as director of Bánh Mì Verlag, his exceedingly important music label that accurately and beautifully traces our millennial compositional meltdown. This ethos wavers diabolically and diligently in his works under the moniker die Reihe, named after Stockhausen’s mid-century composition journal published between 1955 and 1962 devoted to contemporary music.
