Wizard Apprentice I Am Invisible

[Ratskin; 2018]

Styles: digital folk, confessional, therapy, vlogging, electronic, DIY,
Others: Julius Smack, Kohinoorgasm, Colleen, Robert Sotello, YATTA, Mothers, Tirzah,

Wizard Apprentice’s main act toward expression is unpacking: picking their self open, laying their self bare and exploring the remains. For that reason, it’s hard to say much about artist Tiereny Carter that they haven’t already said.

In 2018, Tirzah released Devotion, her gorgeous and intoxicating debut album. We fine folks here loved it so much, it came in at number five on our list of year’s best albums.

Ariana Grande thank u, next

[Republic; 2019]

Styles: Gothic Romance, pop music, the greatest love of all

I hope you find love. Don’t let that be too much to ask. “Why can’t you imagine a world like that?”

Tierra Whack just dropped a new song that’s more than 60 seconds long :~)

Tierra Whack just dropped a new song that's more than 60 seconds long :~)

Tierra Whack has just released a track called “Only Child,” her first new song since the release of Whack World, which made it onto our list of favorite releases from last year. “Only Child” may throw an accusation at someone now and then for being “stingeyyYYyyyYYY,” but on it, the Baltimore rapper is anything but. For her, at least. Clocking in at four minutes, the track is — wait, let me think… Oh yeah, exactly four times longer than any single track off of Whack World.

Chromatics announce 2019 North American tour, share new video for "Time Rider"

Oh yes, oh yes! Chromatics are packing up the van and hitting the road to gently blow your minds with their icy-cold noir brand of dream pop.

Illiterate Light Sweet Beast

[Self-Released; 2019]

Styles: indie rock, new sincerity
Others: Wings, Portugal. The Man, Fleet Foxes

I don’t begrudge any band for aggrandizing their happiness, especially not a group as optimistic as Illiterate Light, who can wrap a decently upbeat melody around downer lyrics like: “I swear nothing’s fair and no one cares/ I’m giving up.” But ennui being the de rigueur subject matter for so many indie outfits, I find myself skeptical nonetheless.

Lee Gamble In a Paraventral Scale

[Hyperdub; 2019]

Rating: 3/5

Styles: electronic design, sonic city-building
Others: Demdike Stare, Raime, Laurel Halo

Cities. New cities. Cities that aren’t even on this earth yet. The kind that Lee Gamble, on In a Paraventral Scale, gives a language to. Cities like shrines shining, where stars spill their milk-light on the silken earth, the air cracking open like an egg. Cities where the cyborg-sublime meets avant-garde sound design, where brujería mixes with psychedelia. Where poets twitch language into glitches, splattering syntax in a fight against their techno-financial bondage.

Eli Keszler speaks like a true urbanist. His subject is New York City, the seat of the Empire State, a 500-year-old melting pot and enduring symbol of global commerce and culture. NYC is the USA’s contribution to the international register of vertical metropoles; its dense quarters are constantly spewing forth new ideas for what a city and its residents could achieve. A dedicated wanderer, Keszler is a careful voyeur and custodian of the city’s growth.

The archetype is that we gradually become unable or unwilling to keep up with technology as it evolves (and as we age), and even though Carl Stone might not disprove that theory of slow-onset Luddism on his own, it’s clear that his life contradicts the notion that we necessarily have to sacrifice proper child-rearing if we want to monitor and understand the latest iPhone technology.
