Playboi Carti Die Lit

[Interscope/AWGE; 2018]

Styles: cumulonimbus, cirrostratus
Others: Lil Uzi Vert, Thouxanbanfauni, YBN Nahmir

Playboi Carti has done it again, and in much the same way as he did it previously. You could be forgiven for losing faith. Last year’s eponymous debut felt insurgent, the culmination of a frothing SoundCloud movement that had grown from insular community to mainstream breeding ground in a matter of months.

The Sea and Cake Any Day

[Thrill Jockey; 2018]

Rating: 3.5/5

Styles: chamber pop, alternative rock, parallel universe am gold
Others: Tortoise, Stereolab, Yo La Tengo

Alhough Any Day seems like an apt opportunity for a bit of a retrospective, that might be tempting fate too much. The Sea and Cake, like their label, have endured a lot of years, and it’s a wonder that they haven’t gone nuts trying to change with them. While there has been subtle variation, their music has stayed more or less the same through all of it. Maybe the fact that each member has projects separate from the group has helped its balmy sound remain intact.

RIP: Glenn Branca

RIP: Glenn Branca

Glenn Branca has died at the age of 69. His influence on TMT has been enormous. RIP.

From Reg Bloor, experimental guitarist and wife of Glenn Branca:

Glenn Branca passed away in his sleep last night from Throat Cancer.

I feel grateful to have been able to live and work with such an amazing source of ideas and creativity for the past 18 1/2 years. His musical output was a fraction of the ideas he had in a given day. His influence on the music world is incalculable.

Her Puberty 2 was hailed by many (us included) as one of 2016’s best albums. But it’s been an uncomfortably long time since puberty, you know? Luckily, today, the many post-pubescent may rejoice! For Mitski has announced her long-awaited (even though two years isn’t that long [but what is time anyway, when great music is at stake???]) follow-up, Be The Cowboy.

Beach House 7

[Sub Pop/Bella Union; 2018]

Styles: dream pop, romance, ASMR
Others: Cocteau Twins, Lower Dens, Slowdive

The first time we fall in love, the world feels uncomfortably bright. Everyday life takes on an oversaturated quality, as if the scenes playing out before us were flecked with magentas and blues that don’t quite belong, a vividness distilled into one person. Like a chemical high — which love is, of course — we momentarily drift into a consciousness that we can’t quite contain. It’s a dream performed with eyes wide open.

If you’re truly cool, you already know that, basically four decades ago, Brixton avant-post-punk trio This Heat put out three massively influential records records (1979’s This Heat, 1980’s Health and Efficiency, and 1981’s Deceit) that fused boring ol’ “punk rock” with everything from krautrock to dub to musique concrète and noise to industrial to Scottish bagpipe music (okay, good catch, that last one was a lie; just testing to make sure you’re truly cool).

Okay. I know what you’re thinking.

Another article about PC Music. Seriously? When is this site going to cover something new? Get this GARBAGE out of here. I want real music, like Zeppelin. Why doesn’t TMT cover more rock & roll??”

Carla Bozulich Quieter

[Constellation; 2018]

Rating: 4.5/5

Styles: punk rock
Others: Carla Bley, Patty Waters, Lydia Lunch, Chavela Vargas, Meredith Monk

Certainly, ripping out the fucking threads with which one’s lips were sewn shut was loud. Certainly, the screaming rage and freedom after the mouth’s maw was released was loud, too. And certainly, when screams through lacerated lips were still caged with pain, this Evangelista, this aching possibility of song, arrived as from above, if only to announce that this scream could be screamed. This lonely angel of pitch-black terror but even also of resplendence, joy, would arrive to announce that there was still an up through which to speak.
