As we recently reported, Jessy Lanza is unloading a new EP this week featuring remixed tracks from her excellent new album, Oh No. The EP, titled Oh No No No, boasts remixes from Morgan Geist and DJ Taye/DJ Spinn, as well as a complete overhaul of “Going Somewhere” by DVA [Hi:Emotions], whose track we have the pleasure of premiering below.
The original cut appears in the center of Oh No — after the album’s slowest song (“I Talk BB”) and before its fastest (“It Means I Love You”) — a sweet, gorgeous synthpop cleanser that finds Lanza dwelling on love and desire over stuttering bass and light, yearning synths. DVA’s remix, however, takes on an unexpectedly somber tone, stretching the succinct pop of the original to a seven-and-a-half-minute experimental epic. Where Lanza explores hope and optimism, DVA gestures toward futility and uncertainty, with a broken minor-chord melody looping among stumbling bass thuds, clipped voice samples, and unwieldy synths, with only one vocal line from Lanza — “I just wanna impress you” — extracted from the original.
Check out DVA’s rework below, and look for Lanza’s Oh No No No EP, out December 9 on Hyperdub. And don’t forget to also grab DVA’s latest album, [Hi:Emotions]’s NOTU_URONLINEU, which is out now.
