Technically you could call the Make Up EP a cassingle, right? All I know is Northern Spy Records is one of the last bastion of hopes for continuing them easy-indie (while keeping composed in the ultra experimental) feel that vibes through people like Shilpa Ray. And covers of Lou Reed’s “Make Up” and María Grever’s “What A Diff’rence A Day Makes” really make finding this cassette a month late melt the snow just a little bit faster. It looks like a sauna across from my apartment in the school-yard park, still cycling its evaporating snow, stagnant mist upon the edge of earth and air; comfort in the ease of momentary cleansing.
Though only two tracks, Make Up EP is worth the extra few bucks you spent on an auto-reverse player, because Shilpa Ray’s voice slowly stirs and ages well with each repeat. That Tuesday morning piano linger, yet still on time. What’s also notably cool is how chill Northern Spy Records is with allowing their musicians to have a lot of creative input. For example, check out their Bandcamp page where Shilpa takes listeners on a short textual-but-wide-eyed adventure into her back stories of “Make Up” and “What A Diff’rence A Day Makes.”
