Remember when the last Coldplay video suggested that they had no where left to go but up from the primordial ooze of their CGI ape adventure? Think again, folks, because not even a Beyonce appearance can save the trainwreck that is “Hymn for the Weekend.” A few think pieces have already called out the video’s appropriation of Indian culture, so it’s not my job to do that here (plus, my colleagues really hit the mark with their own think piece on think pieces). This video makes me think a lot about the contrast between Coldplay the benevolent band spreading joy across the world versus Coldplay the corporate monkeys performing at perhaps the most decadent American media tradition, aka the Super Bowl. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t going to watch…
“Life is a drink, and love’s a drug”
“Oh, now I think I must be miles up
When I was a river, dried up
You came to rain a flood”
“Drink from me, drink from me
Then we’ll shoot across the sky”
TMT BOLD Super Bowl 50 Prediction: Carolina 45, Denver 17
