Kieran Hebden, under his Four Tet moniker, is one of those names the indie press always goes apeshit over. He has perfected a signature style while releasing four acclaimed albums since 1999, but that’s not all. He’s also sharpened his teeth doing a little retooling work for a wealth of different acts. The first of these two discs collects his favourite treatments of electronic greats (Aphex Twin, Bonobo) and indie rockers alike (Bloc Party, Radiohead), while disc two rounds up just about every tweaking of Four Tet’s own work that has ever been released, many previously available only on vinyl. Jay Dee, Boom Bip, Icarus, and Manitoba (Caribou) don’t just remix anybody, you know. Kieran’s reversed field recordings, manic drumming, and general scattered ambiance is all over disc one, to the point that fans of the man could probably consider it a real album. Disc two often speaks more of the individual remixers’ notions about Four Tet’s work than Four Tet’s himself, but the unquestionable quality of those involved and the appeal of seeing Tet through their eyes makes it worthwhile in its own right. Remixes will appeal to the general population, but it’s essential for fans.
