As someone who sincerely liked Billy Corgan’s first solo album TheFutureEmbrace, I was pretty legitimately excited to hear that Corgan was teaming up with producer-even-my-mom-knows Rick Rubin for a new solo album. After announcing this about a year ago, the album, which is titled Ogilala, is finally set to release on October 13. In a move that is not mysterious at all yet remains enigmatic somehow, Corgan is releasing the album under the name William Patrick Corgan. Did you know Billy is short for William?
The first single for the album, “Aeronaut,” has been released; a piano heavy ballad with a redeeming catharsis of an expansive career. With the expectations of The Smashing Pumpkins (or an original lineup reunion), stripped down, Corgan seems more focused and clear. He’s also announced that he’ll be embarking on a small U.S. tour — and maybe, just maybe — a smiling, god-like Rick Rubin will be in the front row at one of those shows, stroking his mighty beard and giving an approving thumbs-up.
