Not to suggest they’re not punk or anything (I would never!), but the sound of Rohnert Park’s Ceremony has gotten less punishing and more melodic as time goes on. Abrasive and jagged, sure, it’s just that some of the “violence” in “power violence” has made way for a different kind of “power.” It makes one wonder just what form Ceremony could take as the years and days march on. Take their summer touring plans. They’re starting in May in their current state of punk/post-punk/indie-rock hybrid. By the tour’s end in mid-July, what will they be? Lounge singers. They may all be lounge singers.
Ceremony’s new album The L Shaped Man is out now, having just been released by Matador. Who’d have thunk that punks would have taken to this new collection of faithful Enya covers, but they love it! There’s a man covered in safety pins crying to Ceremony’s rendition of “Orinoco Flow”! It’s a beautiful sight.
