Dam-Funk announces first record in six years, anxiously frets about a world without funk

According to a website discovered through a quick, specific Google search, the most common fear people have is the fear of flying, closely followed by the fear of public speaking. Somewhere on that list must be the fear of a world without funk. Perhaps you’ve never thought about that possibility, but you are now thinking about it and, likely, are horrified about that possibility. Dam-Funk’s been thinking about that, too, but more importantly, he’s actually doing something about it. On September 4, Dam-Funk will release Invite The Light through Stones Throw, his first album in six years.

Like all of Dam-Funk’s work, one can reasonably assume Invite The Light is actively contributing to a funkier world. And yet,the record begins and ends with a bone-chilling warning about a world with no funk, delivered by Junie Morrison of funk legends The Ohio Players. Morrison is one of the record’s many guests, including Q-Tip, Ariel Pink, Snoop Dogg, the father-son team of Leon Sylvers III & IV, Kid Sister, and Nite Jewel.

That’s more than a few guests, but Invite The Light is billed as a record centered on Dam-Funk himself. The record’s set to be a loosely autobiographical concept album about the funk maestro’s personal and professional album over the past six years. Dam-Funk has stated the record to be his “first fully-realized effort,” a bold statement considering that his last album, Toeachizown, was 24 tracks and 2 hours long. Listen to the record’s first single, “We Continue,” below.

Now, attempt to sleep tonight while the idea of a funkless world rolls around in your head.
