European Deerhoof fans face a most difficult dilemma this fall: if they want to see the band live, it’s going to be expensive. Worse, most of that money will be headed to the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ retirement fund, which I imagine is already doing just fine. Tough call, but it would be a trip to see Saunier’s tiny drumkit on stage at some of the biggest arenas on the continent.
This isn’t quite uncharted territory for the ‘hoof, considering they’ve opened for Radiohead, The Flaming Lips, and Sonic Youth over their many years of existence. Given their recent output’s emphasis on straightforwardness and rhythm, I guess it’s not the worst pairing imaginable. But it is admittedly a head-scratcher.
I imagine the Chili Peppers chartering luxury 747s for 30-minute flights from city to city while Deerhoof slog through customs crammed in their minivan. But maybe, just maybe, this pairing heralds a new era of class-mashing. This is the future, guys. This is togetherness!
