Sometimes, to differentiate a brand new band you’re starting, it’s helpful to give its name a little more zing than your last one had. Accordingly, the Australian alternative scene’s power couple du jour — Gareth Liddiard and Fiona Kitschin — have temporarily put aside their duties comprising the nucleus of The Drones in order to form an experimental-leaning project that they have appropriately called “Tropical Fuck Storm.”
You may have have missed TFS’ first single, “Chameleon Paint,” but now you can cop a load of their follow up single “Soft Power” which is every bit as acerbic and dry-witted as you could ever hope to have from Liddiard in full-force. This time he’s railing against “the oompa lumpa with the nukes” and offers up choice lines like:
Look up there! It’s the multiplex hex of Tom Cruise
At the end of a rainbow all our eyeballs roll through
He’s picked up the option, he’s gonna film the failed coup
Right after he makes Top Gun 2
The single (backed with the b-side “Lose The Baby” and once again featuring original cover art by Montréal artist Joe Becker) is available November 17 on all your favorite streaming platforms — or via 7-inch as part of the group’s four part series of mail order records on their own specially-minted Tropical Fuck Storm Records.
