New York’s arena mopers Interpol have been releasing a steady stream of post-punk revivalism since the early aughts — first they were an inventively derivative version of Joy Division, then they were a pleasingly derivative version of themselves, and then they just kinda sucked for a while. Now with their anagrammatic fifth LP El Pintor seeing release on September 9 via longtime home Matador, it looks like the longstanding trio might be making a comeback… again. According to Rolling Stone, Interpol’s latest is “perhaps their best effort since 2004’s Antics,” which I just called “a pleasingly derivative version of themselves.” At least it’s not Our Love to Admire, right guys? And the single sounds respectable.
Currently on tour in Europe and Australia, Interpol will continue supporting El Pintor in the fall with an extensive North American tour. It’ll see the bespoke-suited band at Austin City Limits, L.A.’s FYF Fest, and back at Manhattan’s Terminal 5 to wrap up their first US jaunt in three years. Interpol may not be all the rage back home anymore, but they’re still huge in South America. Viva El Pintor, y el metro es una porno.
