Greetings from the future, the year 2064! I gotta tell you, things here are great! There are no more wars, disease is virtually nonexistent, and you can finally get both the breaded and baked kinds of mozzarella sticks together, in the same order of mozzarella sticks! But, while all that is obviously fantastic, there is one downside to the future… We’re still waiting on those My Bloody Valentine vinyl reissues!
If you’ll recall, up until Creation Records’s original proclamation in 2016 that vinyl reissues of My Bloody Valentine’s back catalog were in the works, things had been very quiet on the My Bloody Valentine front. We had not heard much of anything since m b v was released in 2013, which itself came after a separate 22-year quiet period (at least on the recording front) after the release of Loveless in 1991.
Then, out of nowhere, we heard that Kevin Shields was hard at work at Abbey Road Studios, cutting and remastering from the band’s original analog recordings. Sean Magee, mastering engineer at Abbey Road, had also tweeted a couple of months prior that he was with Shields, in studio, working on the remasters (specifically Loveless, with remasters of the band’s first album, Isn’t Anything, and their EPs, presumably to come). The world rejoiced: Parades were held. Babies were conceived. At least one hand was broken after accidentally slamming the desk too hard in celebration.

48 years later however, vinyl has since fallen out of style, had a second resurgence, and then gone back out of style again. Sales have become pretty much nonexistent ever since the younger generations rejected listening to music in favor of sticking their heads underwater and listening to themselves scream obscenities. So, I must say, I do kind of doubt that these fabled My Bloody Valentine remasters will ever get to see the light of day. At present, we here in 2064 haven’t heard anything since the last time the astral projection of Kevin Shields’s soul insisted that they were imminent. That was four years ago. Who really knows anymore.
Rest assured though, if My Bloody Valentine’s back catalog ever does get reissued on vinyl, I will be sure to send a message through time to let you know, ASAP. It’ll be nice for you to have something to look forward to when you’re pushing 80 years old. You know, aside from the end of all wars, the eradication of disease, and the being able to get two kinds of mozzarella sticks in one order of mozzarella sticks. All that stuff is pretty awesome too.
