Hey, speaking of shameless and deliberate pop overindulgences, Sicko Mobb’s enduring embrace of a particular software vocal manipulator (which, I’m thinking, was initially designed to be used sparingly) was an obvious takeaway from their debut mixtape Super Saiyan Vol. 1, which came out at the beginning of the year. A perpetual disconnect from the mainstream prevents me from analyzing the stylistic use of Auto-Tune otherwise, but here’s what I’ve learned from Lil Trav and Lil Ceno’s what-could-be-labelled “abuse” of the effect: it’s actually pretty goddamn enjoyable, especially when, paired with some stereotypical hip-hop overtones, it leads you to believe that they’re probably not taking themselves too seriously.
It’s all fun and games! And hopefully that continues despite the contractual attention that the duo’s received both pre- and post-mixtape. Back in December they signed a publishing deal with Stargate/Sony ATV, and earlier this month, an official record deal was announced with Polo Grounds/RCA, home to hurried rappers A$AP Rocky and A$AP Ferg. Naturally, this is quite an accomplishment for two dudes who reportedly only started rapping roughly a year ago, and who were initially just in it “for something else to do” in their hometown of Chicago.
Now all we need is third-party confirmation. Quick, Vegeta, what does the scouter say?
