2012’s Da Mind of Traxman was so thoroughly satisfying that it was somewhat forgivable if you glossed over or even ignored the many tracks and mixes that he — the ghetto house/footwork/juke veteran from West Side Chicago — shared through his various SoundCloud accounts. He even released a couple EPs that went way under the radar. But one of the two that caught our attention was the Heat EP on Sewage Tapes, which saw Traxman fucking with Black Sabbath, Heatwave, and even some bebop, showcasing a relatively bizarre side to an artist who has always taken odd risks with his samples, but didn’t have a chance to share on the platform that his Planet Mu release provided.
His forthcoming EP, titled SO DAMN WHATTT !!!!, has him hooking up this time with Sewage Tapes’ parent label, Interscape Records, and it’s a bit more classic Traxman (minus the juke elements, for the most part) — which is to say that it’s equal parts bonkers and soulful. The majority of the tracks share production with his buds from his Geto DJ’z and TEK families, including DJ L.P., DJ Fred, and DJ Rome, making for a varied yet focused EP. Check out tracks like “C’mon” and “Tha Tekk DJ’z,” and maybe you’ll agree that this is his strongest, boldest release since Da Mind of Traxman.
Listen to SO DAMN WHATTT !!!! in its entirety below and look for the EP on August 6 via all major digital retailers.
