Ever since Washed Out emerged in 2009, Ernest Greene’s electronic-pop project has been called many things. Chillwave, glo-fi, glowave, a band, not a band, and once, by an extremely intoxicated man in Lansing, Michigan, an electric nightmare. But, above all else, Ernest Greene has been a patron of the arts. Not everyone knows it, but Greene possesses one of the largest art collections among those creating soothing electronic music. Recently, he purchased a very interesting painting from a local gallery.
“It’s like a clown, but if you really look at it, you begin to realize that it’s also not like a clown,” said Greene.
Yes, intriguing stuff indeed. Hence why Washed Out is going on tour this fall, partly to promote his recent album on Sub Pop, Paracosm (TMT Review), but mostly as an excuse to show people this crazy painting. Of course, due to the obligations of being an active musical group, he’ll also be playing shows. Once the show ends, expect Greene to walk into the audience with his prized painting. “Look at it,” he’ll say. “Look at it and you’ll feel what I’m feeling.” At this point, fans will nod and make excuses to leave.
