Bill Callahan finishes the beer he left at the bar in 2013, gears up to release new album, and marches out on tour

Hey, listen to this: that guy finally came back to the bar last night. Honest to goodness! The one who left a half-emptied Milwaukee’s Best on the bar back in 2013 back when he’d just released some sort of album. Just walked right on in and started talkin’ to me like he’d never left. And he drank the beer, too! Must have gotten a little musty over the years, but he didn’t seem to mind one bit.

Marvin the Martian on the front and back of a triple-oversized t-shirt, looking like he ‘bout to drop out the damn saucer and juice us all the fuck up. Detective Bugs Bunny as a gumshoe sleuth holding a magnifier, sniffing out clues for some damsel — who’s Bugs Bunny in rouge — to find the killer (turns out to also be Bugs Bunny, but with only one eye) of her husband: Bugs Bunny.

With a cascade of releases spewing from the likes of DatPiff, LiveMixtapes, Bandcamp, and SoundCloud, it can be difficult to keep up with the overbearing yet increasingly vital mixtape game. In this column, we aim to immerse ourselves in this hyper-prolific world and share our favorite releases each month. The focus will primarily be on rap mixtapes — loosely defined here as free (or sometimes free-to-stream) digital releases — but we’ll keep things loose enough to branch out if/when we feel it necessary.

Actress to premiere new opera entitled Actress x Stockhausen Sin {x} II, inspired by love and Stockhausenian cloud debates

Actress to premiere new opera entitled Actress x Stockhausen Sin {x} II, inspired by love and Stockhausenian cloud debates

Normally when the question “what is love?” enters the millennial brain, immature flashbacks of Will Ferrell head-bobbing naturally take over in lieu of a deeper or more intellectual train of thought. But most interviews attest to Actress (a.k.a. Darren Cunningham) having a brain that’s seemingly immune to this kind of impulse — which might explain the creative direction that he’s clearly taking with the aforementioned question.

LIL ICEBUNNY in his natural habitat

James Ferraro has just announced a new album, Requiem for Recycled Earth, out May 3 via Bandcamp. While I’m personally assuming that the album consists of 13 guitar-centric, third-wave-emo-revival songs — no music from the release has been shared yet, and the tracklist features song titles like “No Future” and “Recycled Sky” — Ferraro has dubbed the new release “a 57 minute-long opus into ecocide and planetary divorce.”

Let’s take the Way-Back Machine alllllll the way back to 2016:

• The good ol’ Chicago Cubs won their first world series, but no one cared because Donald Trump won the U.S. presidential election like 3 hours later.

• Twitter was limited to like — I dunno — 43 characters or some horrible shit. (Yeah, remember?)

Laurel Halo: Hi lol
Julia Holter: hey?

Tashi Wada: Julia, you know how you’ve been working on that remix for “Fanfare”? From the FRKWYS album from last year?
Julia Holter: Sure.

The Caretaker Everywhere at the end of time - Stage 6

[History Always Favours the Winners; 2019]

Styles: ambience in translation, imagined real death, recovery, and then
Others: Liz Harris, Virginia Woolf, Rainer Maria Rilke

“O shooting star
that fell into my eyes and through my body—:
Not to forget you. To endure.”

Rilke’s words. It is not about forgetting. It is about loss.

Forgetting is temporary. A face’s name leaps from your tongue but with the right scramble of stimuli — a wafted vapor of fresh croissant, a maybe flash of the first time with those eyes — there is recovery. Time resumes when what is forgotten reappears.

Lafawndah Ancestor Boy

[Concordia/!K7; 2019]

Styles: post-global pop, Faye Dunaway pop, the way Umm Kulthum would sing “Allah” and get rapturous applause
Others: Abida Parveen, Fairuz, Gena Rowlands, Homeyra, Kelela

Last year, the experimental pop musician Lafawndah posted a series of pictures to Instagram of iconic women artists with the caption “MOTHER.” As an exercise in mood-boarding, it was unimpeachable, a lineup of avant-queens, perfectly calibrated to make a certain subset of artsy, clubby people go “yassss.” But the photos themselves also spoke to her sense of origin and ambition, encompassing foremothers of Persian folk (Sima Bina), first ladies of hip-hop (Lauryn Hill), legendary composers (Meredith Monk, Midori Takada), and filmmakers both in front and behind the c

Teklife commemorates the legacy of DJ Rashad in new book by Ashes57

I’ve said it many, many times before: books are terrible wastes of time, space, and money when they aren’t massive, 340-page photo books about fucking footwork.

Luckily, this one totally IS.

To commemorate the 5th anniversary of the passing of the mighty DJ RASHAD (and ahead of tonight’s memorial party going down in Chicago), TEKLIFE has announced the release of a new road diary that pays fitting tribute to the fallen footwork legend.
