Wume Towards the Shadow

[Northern Spy; 2018]

Styles: kosmische, electronic
Others: Dan Deacon, Kelly Moran, Jenny Hval

On their third studio album Towards the Shadow, Baltimore dream machine Wume parse the intersections of technology and the human condition, leavening their ideas with an inimitable collection of kosmic futurist soundscapes. Gardens are corralled by manmade walls. Daily modern existence is mostly just a work/commute/sleep cycle. Monotony is groove. Voice is consternation. Hospitals are assailable. Nature is irascible. Architecture is fallible. Organic life is limitation. Literature is music. Herbert Marcuse is lyrics. Shadow is self. Industry is art.

Once upon a time, Derek Smith wrote: “2017 was a year endured rather than lived.” But all due respect to the past, because here we are creeping into this new 2019 and things are so much better than we thought they’d be!

Were you waiting patiently for a sign of what kind of “shit” 2019 might throw at “the fan?”

Well wait no longer my friend. William Basinski, who’s released some albums you may have heard of, has announced a new project called On Time Out of Time, where he will apparently redefine himself as not just a composer, but as a theoretical physicist, too.

The horse is anthropomorphized as an unhappy man. The hitman wants to become an actor. The Russians are Americans. The living woman is the dead woman. The MI5 agent loves the killer but also tries to kill her; the killer loves the agent and could renounce killing to be with her. “With or without you,” Bono sings at the end of The Americans. But which will it be? These people have a lot of important decisions to make!

Behold, the vast digital world. In 2018, we created the biggest, longest, most immersive games that the world has ever seen. Shimmering lakes, colossal mountains, dozens of idiosyncratic fighters, epic slam dunks. “Detail porn,” some called it. People may look back at 2018 as a year that we stopped looking at real trees and skies because the false ones were so goddamn attractive that we stopped leaving our houses. Blah blah blah. Boo hoo. Already bored? Same. I wanted to make some points about video games and life, but I’m not going to.

With a cascade of releases spewing from the likes of DatPiff, LiveMixtapes, Bandcamp, and SoundCloud, it can be difficult to keep up with the overbearing yet increasingly vital mixtape game. In this column, we aim to immerse ourselves in this hyper-prolific world and share our favorite releases each month. The focus will primarily be on rap mixtapes — loosely defined here as free (or sometimes free-to-stream) digital releases — but we’ll keep things loose enough to branch out if/when we feel it necessary.

Earl Sweatshirt Some Rap Songs

[Tan Cressida/Columbia; 2018]

Styles: bloodletting, sludge rap
Others: “Press, King, Navy, Med, MIKE on the bench”

“It ain’t really bout the lyrics or the wordplay / Boy this something from my spirit and my worst days”
– MIKE, “GREEDY”

Somewhere in our photo libraries is a snap unready for the moment of its internment. The image may be blurred, out of focus, or overexposed. Whatever the imprecision is, its presence, born of a rush, calls for memory’s counsel. We fill in what the camera couldn’t possibly know, and we toggle our understanding until at ease with the frame of things. “That’s what happened,” and we cling. “Imprecise words”
