DAWN (fka Dawn Richard) unveils new album New Breed, shares title track, looks AMAZING

In all fairness, DAWN (fka Dawn Richard) was SUPPOSED to reveal the details of her hotly anticipated forthcoming album to the world TOMORROW. (As a press mogul, I’m totally “in-the-know,” and I assure y’all that was the original plan).

In the (somewhat likely) event that you haven’t been ALIVE since 1979, you (also pretty likely) didn’t know that 2019 marks — in the ever-artful words of Room40 label boss Lawrence English — “the 40th anniversary of the commencement of Merzbow.”

Drew McDowall’s work extends well before Coil’s 1998 album Time Machines, but his major releases from that work to now is more than enough to explore. Coil fans, I know you’re set. It’s partly you who I had in mind when I welched on my assignment for his latest solo album, The Third Helix. You likely have alerts on this guy, and no amount of critical descriptors (“harrowing,” “cavernous,” “dreamscape,” “hallucinatory,” “bleak,” “trance-inducing,” etc.) are going to make any difference to you.

Carly Rae Jepsen confirms new album in 2019, shares video for new song "Party For One"

There are two things I’m sure of: (1) life is cruel, and (2) we need Carly Rae Jepsen. Following our own desperate plea for less of the former and more of the latter, Carly Rae Jepsen has released a new video for a song called “Party For One.” Co-written by Jepsen and produced by Captain Cuts and HIGHTOWER, the song is confirmed to be off Jepsen’s long-awaited follow-up to 2015’s life-altering E•MO•TION.

With a cascade of releases spewing from the likes of DatPiff, LiveMixtapes, Bandcamp, and SoundCloud, it can be difficult to keep up with the overbearing yet increasingly vital mixtape game. In this column, we aim to immerse ourselves in this hyper-prolific world and share our favorite releases each month. The focus will primarily be on rap mixtapes — loosely defined here as free (or sometimes free-to-stream) digital releases — but we’ll keep things loose enough to branch out if/when we feel it necessary.
