Taipei-born ambient alchemist Jing to release new 12-inch EP via 6dimensions, premieres full stream

So, who is Jing, you ask? Well, I COULD start by telling you that she’s a (relatively) new artist/writer/musician from Taipei, now based in Berlin. I COULD tell you that she makes eerie borderline-ASMR style ambient music in the vein of, say, Elysia Crampton, Pan Daijing, PAN’s mono no aware compilation, et. al.

A eulogy is something no one can ever really comprehend until it sits before them. It’s bittersweet, both a chance to remember how much a person has contributed to your world and a sobering reminder that no further chapters will be added to your experiences with that individual.

Migos Culture II

[Quality Control; 2018]

Styles: zeitgeist, cultural studies (studies!)
Others: Gucci Mane, Cardo Got Wings, The Beatles

In a couple of weeks, No Label 2 will turn four years old. I remember it well, which is to say that I recall a distinct period during which “Fight Night” was inescapable. Recently, however, I’ve remembered something else: my friend, as excited about Migos as I was, asking whether I was was honestly able to listen to the tape straight through. The answer was an unequivocal no.

It’s 2018, y’all! And while some of you are out here still “playing concerts” and “releasing albums,” Jenny Hval and Håvard Volden are transcending our material plane as Lost Girls. With their debut two-track project, Feeling, out March 2 on Smalltown Supersound, the duo is dissolving theory and structure and all those other things that are just plain old hat.

Forget the death of God and the death of the Author. What year are you from? “This is the death of material!” so says Hval.

Panda Bear A Day with the Homies

“A real feeling of freedom occurs only in a fruitful relationship — when being with others brings happiness.”
– Byung-Chul Han, Psychopolitics

“Being free and having ties was one and the same thing. I am free because I have ties, because I am linked to a reality greater than me.”
– The Invisible Committee, To Our Friends

Here’s an admirable artistic philosophy, Whether you play the clarinet or roll around in colors and use your naked body as an urban paintbrush: “I just hope the world comes to me as opposed to the other way around, because I’m gonna just keep on doing what I do.”

Barcelona's Bad Gyal shares track from upcoming mixtape with Jam City, Dubbel Dutch, and more

Bad Gyal, Barcelona’s #rising TriLingualWebSensationTM, has just announced a mixtape to start the year. Following the one-two punch of 2017 singles “Jacaranda” and “Nicest Cocky,” the new tape sees the 20-year-old femme provocateur flexing her dancehall-inflected reggaetón club aesthetic and fiery trilingual vocals (Spanish, Catalan, English) alongside the likes of Jam City, Dubbel Dutch, Fake Guido, D33J, Paul Marmota, and more.

...And what's wrong with that?

Okay, 2018 newbies. This is it. It’s time to roll up your sleeves and quit boppin’ around to Bruno Mars and Wings and shit. It’s practically February, and you’ve got new feelings to feel, new theories to ponder, new and brave and visceral and transcendent dimensions of ART to experience.

Various Artists (Houndstooth) In Death’s Dream Kingdom

[Houndstooth; 2018]

Styles: mistah kurtz - he dead
Others: a penny for the old guy

Those who have crossed With direct eyes, to death’s other kingdom Remember us — if at all — not as lost Violent souls, but only As the hollow men

[Note: These voices belong not to those blissful dead who wander throughout eternity with no knowledge of god (though, shadows of his presence, their bliss, to the viewer, is no doubt tinged with melancholy), but to those poets who, having brushed aside the veil, speak from the silence of the youthful dead, dreaming death’s kingdom.]

With a cascade of releases spewing from the likes of DatPiff, LiveMixtapes, Bandcamp, and SoundCloud, it can be difficult to keep up with the overbearing yet increasingly vital mixtape game. In this column, we aim to immerse ourselves in this hyper-prolific world and share our favorite releases each month. The focus will primarily be on rap mixtapes — loosely defined here as free (or sometimes free-to-stream) digital releases — but we’ll keep things loose enough to branch out if/when we feel it necessary.
