Pop. 1280 make the type of music that scares cats and makes suburban moms worry about their kids’ choice in friends. (I assume Pop. 1280 are friends with a lot of suburban children, you know, just to be creepy.) And now the noisey Brooklyn synth-punk weirdos have a second full-length in the works for the giant human-sized bat that runs Sacred Bones out of his cavey lair. In a press release that I really feel “gets” me, the label promises that the new album, Imps of Perversion, is just chock full of “stories of lust, sexual confusion, temptation, and debauchery.” Dear Press Release, will you go out with me? I think we could really be something.
Recorded at BC Studios with producer to the stars Martin Bisi (Sonic Youth, Cop Shoot Cop, Swans), Imps of Perversion is the follow-up to last year’s acclaimed The Horror LP (TMT Review), and it drops August 6; check out the first single and first album track below. Pop. 1280 have done the Midwest and East Coast tour circuit extensively and this fall, they’re striking out with an entourage of creepy elves, pookas, and pagan owl gods to tour the debauched hinterlands of the West Coast to support the album. Then eventually they’ll all drift off together on a ship full of ghosts and red wine to take over the great old weird homeland, Europe.
