PC Music artist felicita shares video of music from dance piece Soft Power, new album coming in 2018
Just lick it.

Following felicita’s recent NTS radio show, the PC Music-affiliated artist has shared a new video for a work titled “hej!” Directed by Matt Copson, the video captures Polish dancing over sparse, fragile piano melodies that bend and swerve themselves through subtle wavering pitches and slight dissonance. The music comes from felicita’s Soft Power, an Unsound-commissioned performance piece featuring traditional dancers from Poland’s renowned Śląsk Song and Dance Ensemble. According to Unsound:

Hey, young, savvy readers! Tell me if this is gonna fly with you or not, okay?

So: I just read that a singer (well, some kind of musician, anyway) named Charli XCX — whoever THAT is — said a THING yesterday? On TWITTER?? About a NEW ALBUM???

Ceramic TL + Ipek Gorgun Perfect Lung

[Halocline Trance; 2017]

Rating: 4/5

Styles: ambient, musique concrète, electronica, warm trash
Others: Egyptrixx, Oneohtrix Point Never, LXV, Kara-Lis Cloverdale

Trash is a term riddled with negative connotations. When we hear that word, we think of everyday unpleasantries such as littered streets or those empty cans on our kitchen counters that we constantly forget to throw out. It becomes even worse when we think about trash in eco-political terms: plastic bags floating in the ocean, hungry birds strangled by them, and all the life suffering by their decay.

♫♪  Tomaga - “Memory In Vivo Exposure Parts 1 & 2”

Remember that first scene in Akira, when the polychrome luminescence of the bike gang’s motorcycles crown the Indonesian jegog backbone of the moment’s sensorial constellation? As the glittering neoteny delivers us into a striated future, the synthesized percussion shoots us back into the past in a gesture of strong messianism.

Ty Dolla $ign Beach House 3

[Atlantic; 2017]

Rating: 4.5/5

Styles: rhythm, blues, Los Angeles
Others: Jeremih, Big TC

I had a hell of a nap to this record while on a plane to warmer climes. It’s understandable if that sounds like a dig, but it’s not meant that way. Effortless integration with an elevator ride down and back up the spectrum of consciousness (at cruising altitude, no less!) is a triumph of album structure and evidences total mastery of aural relaxation. For an album called Beach House 3, there is no higher aspiration.

Errorsmith Superlative Fatigue

[PAN; 2017]

Styles: honest accelerationism
Others: MMM, Mark Fell, Lee Gamble, Alex Williams

“I think that it is possible only if we start from exhaustion”
– Franco ‘Bifo’ Berardi

“I’m tired, you tired”
Kanye West

Roger Eno This Floating World

[Recital; 2017]

Styles: if a piano could regret
Others: Erik Satie, Harold Budd, Hans-Joachim Roedelius

“Living only for the moment, savoring the moon, the snow, the cherry blossoms, and the maple leaves, singing songs, drinking sake, and diverting oneself just in floating, unconcerned by the prospect of imminent poverty, buoyant and carefree, like a gourd carried along with the river current: this is what we call ukiyo.”
– Asai Ryōi, Tales of the Floating World, 1661

Pantsula! (Pants: optional)

While Soundway, Strut, Mississippi, and other Africa-minded labels have rightly focused on highlighting the continent’s stacked cache of undiscovered funk, rock, soul, and folk jams, they have given Africa’s early electronic dance scenes the relative shaft. It’s a void that Amsterdam’s Rush Hour Records happily and successfully fills with the new compilation Pantsula! The Rise Of Electronic Dance Music In South Africa, 1988-90, out December 4.

Jackie Shane Any Other Way

[Numero Group; 2017]

Styles: soul, funk, boogaloo, rhythm-and-blues
Others: Little Richard, James Brown

It’s sometimes difficult to separate a fascinating story from a compelling musical statement — and one shouldn’t have to, as most artists completely live their work through both glory and difficulty. Of course, the more obscure the musician and more complex their story, the heavier the extra-musical weight becomes. Soul singer Jackie Shane’s life, even if she hadn’t recorded, would have been legendary on its own.
