W00dy Relentless Kickdrum

[Self-Released; 2018]

Styles: 5-hydroxytryptamine, whoooooooosh, mania
Others: Unicorn Hard-On, Jlin, Lockbox, Container

The music on Relentless Kickdrum, the latest album by Philadelphia-based electronic musician W00dy, is defined by velocity. Not only are the tempos expeditious, but each motif and rhythmic variation that’s introduced is consistently toyed with and reworked, often giving the illusion of repetition while pushing the music forward at full tilt. Although W00dy ostensibly fits into the wave of artists fusing noise and dancefloor-centric styles, the way she synthesizes the genres emphasizes rhythmic disorientation over sonic heaviness.

Noname Room 25

[Self-Released; 2018]

Styles: hip-hop, jazz rap, soul
Others: Kendrick Lamar, Ms. Lauryn Hill

“Um, hello everybody. I’m Noname,” Fatimah Warner softly announces over rapturous applause after the first song of her 2017 Tiny Desk Concert. “I’ve watched so many of these, so I’m like, ‘Man, I just wanna be as good as T-Pain,’” she giggles before graciously introducing her backing band. The Chicago rapper Noname is modesty incarnate.

Guerilla Toss Twisted Crystal

[DFA; 2018]

Styles: new wave, synth pop, hyper pop, cyber punk
Others: Plastics, Birthing Hips, Devo, Fire-Toolz, Machine Girl, Gang of Four, Grace Jones, Crying, Laurie Anderson

Doubling down on the move toward cleaned-up, synthy, punky, hyperactive pop music that they had established with last year’s GT ULTRA, Guerilla Toss return with the more confidently playful, more vibrant, and somewhat more convincing release that is Twisted Crystal. If the band maintains pace with their output and continues their inert but gradual motion into new territory (this is their third full-length in a row released with little more than a year in between), we can stay hopeful for what’s to come.

Mount Eerie (after)

[P.W. Elverum & Sun; 2018]

Styles: folk, acoustic
Others: The Microphones, Mark Kozelek, Bill Callahan, Elliott Smith, Ryan Adams

“I went back to feel alone there/ I went back to wipe it clean/ I took the lights and radio towers out of my dreams.”
– The Microphones, “The Moon”

“I went back to feel alone there/ All past selves and future possibilities on hold/ While I tore through the dark on the freeway.”
– Mount Eerie, “Soria Moria”

♫♪  공중도둑 (Mid-Air Thief) - 무너지기

Summer Soul, who provides vocals on 공중도둑's 무너지기

South Korea’s 공중도둑, or Mid-Air Thief, specializes in the kind of autumn vibes that all of us in the northern hemisphere are craving hard. So it may be a good thing that 무너지기 (Crumbling) took a little while to make its way out of Seoul. It’s hard to tell exactly where the buzz came from, but at some point in late August, this broke into the top 25 rankings for 2018 on RYM, whose lists are always full of left-field gems.

Shinichi Atobe Heat

[DDS; 2018]

Styles: ambient techno, deep house, dub
Others: snd, Oval, DJ Sprinkles

When I was in high school, I stumbled upon a documentary about turntablism called Scratch. This was when I first experienced legends like Afrika Bambaataa, DJ Shadow, DJ Babu, Preemo, Qbert, Cut Chemist; it was my introduction into electronic music that wasn’t 1940s electroacoustic music (I was a strange adolescent). What stuck with me, though, was a suspiciously short section featuring a white female drum & bass DJ, who I misremembered for years after as Goldie; it turns out, of course, that Goldie is a black male British breakbeat musician.

We’re almost at the end (of time). The Caretaker’s massive six-part series on dementia, Everywhere at the end of time, sees the release of its penultimate installment today with Stage 5. It is described thusly by James Leyland Kirby: “More extreme entanglements, repetition and rupture can give way to calmer moments. The unfamiliar may sound and feel familiar. Time is often spent only in the moment leading to isolation.”

Shock, camp, trash, titillation, prurience…No one does all this quite like Mr. Prurient himself, Dominick Fernow. For over 20 years now, Fernow’s Hospital Productions has been THE go-to label for extreme noise performance and to prove the point, it will host a full day and night of live convulsive beauty in Queens in December.

Ticketmaster reportedly authorizing and making money off of clandestine scalping program
"Are you sure it was Ticketmaster? They're a good company. Seriously, fuck you for accusing without proof."

UPDATE (1:30 PM EST): Ticketmaster denies the allegations in a statement, according to a post by Variety. “We do not condone the statements made by the employee as the conduct described clearly violates our terms of service.”

Sandro Perri In Another Life

[Constellation; 2018]

Styles: temperance and serenity, pop litanies, slow-moving filigrees
Others: Arthur Russell, Julian Lynch, Mac DeMarco if he were post-(smog) Bill Callahan

Unlike other thresholds in the human lifecycle, passing into adulthood is the least tied to physical changes. Birth, adolescence, and even entering one’s golden years all carry transformations requiring no metaphorical elaboration. The wrinkles, spots, pimples… the actual growing pains are there. Instead, a monotonous stillness appears to indicate the arrival of adulthood. Which is pretty counterintuitive, come to think of it.
