Dean Blunt, the (chosen) one and only, makes his return with Soul on Fire, which — ALERT — is not the same Soul on Fire mirrored here. In contrast to that DMX/Metallica composite, the new Soul on Fire features nine melloncollie tracks, with contributions from A$AP Rocky, Mica Levi, Lady T, Poison Anna, and Jockstrap.

Mhysa continues to change lives around the world, announces European tour
Straight off the heels of her fantastic 2017 album fantasii (which came in hot at #10 on our Favorite 50 Music Releases of 2017 list — I know because I wrote the blurb), Mhysa isn’t done fucking us up in that sort of intimate, sort of evil way.

David Lynch and Angelo Badalamenti to release lost album of “Modern Music” as Thought Gang
FINALLY: an article where we can freely reference the universe of cult hit early 90s television program, cult hit slightly later early 90s film, and cult hit late 2010s premium cable revival series Twin Peaks! Despite never getting much in the way of formal recognition from lamestream America — thanks for nothing, The 70th Primetime Emmy Awards! — the world of Twin Peaks is truly a gift that keeps on giving.

Ava Luna Moon 2
Styles: new wave, indie pop, synth pop, psychedelic pop
Others: Palm, Dirty Projectors, Omni, Midnight Sister, Deerhoof, Lily & Horn Horse, Pictorial Candi, Locate S,1
Situated in New York, Ava Luna has developed their own prog-y, punk-y sort of soul-pop that skirts the limits of traditional songwriting, dissolving form into a pretty imaginative, exciting, and elusive stew. This came to fruition most fully with their third full-length, 2014’s Electric Balloon, which folded lingering hooks and evocative images into a sort of bare-bones, guitar-driven, formless mélange.

Objekt crushes cocoon, emerges with new album Cocoon Crush on PAN
Butterflies take for-fucking-ever to be born, if you really think about it. That’s metamorphosis, man — one day, you’re this fat little worm guy with like 30 stubby appendages crawling along on a leaf that you’re probably also eating, then you’re instinctively walling yourself up into a little slimy egg thing, and finally you re-emerge in your true form: beautiful, wings slick with goo, relatively lanky.

Yves Tumor Safe in the Hands of Love
Styles: honesty
Others: David Bowie, James Ferraro
What does it even mean to be “experimental” anymore? It’s a term that’s supposed to connote some kind of wading into uncharted territory, a willingness to push beyond our most subliminally held beliefs when it comes to how we perceive music and, to a larger extent, the world. But the word has increasingly become shorthand for a specific scene of artists today who fit just as neatly into predetermined boundaries as any other genre tag.

Animal Collective Tangerine Reef
Styles: eco-psych, enviro-pop, weird ocean
Others: Panda Bear, Avey Tare, SpongeBob SquarePants
They were the greatest psych-pop band in the world until they weren’t. You know, back in the Merriweather Post Pavilion days, when Obama was in office and love was in the air. But then something shocking happened: social media became a way of life, and we all became narcissistic and bent on beautifying our cyberspace. Amidst all of that, a bunch of non-guitar-based genres gained prominence in the 2010s.

Aphex Twin Collapse
Styles: idm, electronic
Others: Caustic Window, AFX
Richard D. James is so cagey about his public presence that his fame seems to border on the unilateral. He can go 13 years without releasing a proper album, anonymously drop hundreds of unreleased tracks onto Soundcloud, and plant portentous Aphex Twin logos on edifices around the globe, all while operating more or less sub rosa.
