A few weeks ago, I was hanging around the KCHUNG radio station in Los Angeles, talking to another DJ about his techno set. As we were chatting about the songs he was playing, he started telling me that, in spite of how seriously people take dance music culture, most DJs are actually just goofing around. He said that, during its 90s heyday, rave music was more of a parody of itself than some slick, buttoned-up ideal of black-cap cool, and that ultimately Coachella bros were probably more in touch with the true spirit of dance music than most deep techno heads.

♫♪  Arca - “Fetiche”

Outta seemingly nowhere (which is when the best stuff happens), Arca has shared an 11-minute video on YouTube. The work is titled “Fetiche,” and according to the description, the music is composed of “new material and edits.”

Check out the flower-stomping video — directed by Arca and Carlos Sáez — above, and, as Arca suggests: look inward, cut yourself loose from your self, and tolerate no abuse.

Styles: psyacht rock
Others: The Velvet Underground, Alex Cameron, Destroyer

Who is music for? Is it for the artist or the listener? And who is the artist?

Recently, albums dealing with the experience of grief — in particular, Mount Eerie, but also, for example, Japanese Breakfast — have been prominent on the cultural landscape. As Damon McMahon (Amen Dunes) began recording Freedom, his mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer. As such, the critic notes with apprehension that bringing to bear a critical lens becomes a morally fraught task.

“Claustra” video still

If this isn’t a testament to the fact that my thoughts control the universe, then I don’t know what is. Literally just the other day I was thinking to myself, “Dang, those Eartheater records from a few years ago were totally excellent. Sure hope she drops some more goodness on us in the form of a full-length album, or at least maybe a video that takes place in a graveyard soon.” And what do you know?

Now, I want you to think back. Waaaaaay back. Back before Gang Gang Dance was just a tag we stapled onto any “indie” band that discovered synthesizers and East Asian music. Back before I wrote for this site, or (probably) you read this site either. Back when Gang Gang Dance were the original “hipster shit.” Ah, those were the days…

Since 2014, a handful of deep, otherworldly synth transmissions emanating from Floridian mystic Severed+Said have carved an exciting niche within the fervent, if underrated, independent music outposts of the Sunshine State. Across four releases, Jacksonville’s John Touchton composes sounds that draw inspiration from the ritualistic undertones of creation, performance, and consumption.
