“The world becomes shadow… A glowing aquarium.”
– Rimbaud

Vaporwave, a.k.a. the symbiotic real, where everything is what it is, yet nothing coincides exactly with itself. There are no palm trees, Greek statues, or modern cuboid sofas, because everything consists of cyber-void & digital-mass. It’s a paradox. As the sound outside of itself emotes, a signifier finally, almost vainly, appears.

Frog Eyes are about ready to croak: announce final album and farewell tour

How long do frogs typically live, anyway? Vancouver-based indie rock foursome Frog Eyes have been keepin’ it cold-blooded since like 2001 (it’s amazing that they haven’t been stepped on by now!) — so it’s probably only fittingly humane that the band has announced that they’ll be putting themselves to sleep after the release of their 11th and final full-length studio album Violet Palms — which is due May 18 on Paper Bag Records.

“I haven’t sat idle through my grief and anger, and let the shitty things eat holes in me and ruin me for the rest of my life. My whole adult life I’ve taken a really aggressive attack against falling prey to my own experiences, and to my own reaction to things, and I feel like it’s paying off.”

Mark Templeton travels into the mystic with forthcoming Distorted Tourist photobook + flexi package, out this June on Graphical

If you think you can count on Canadian sound curator Mark Templeton to deliver the mundane, predictable, straight-forward goods, you would be (thankfully) wrong. This is a man who insists on following his heart into fantastic spheres to create sounds that massage the mind and soothe the ear. This time around, Templeton traveled physically into industrial and commercial neighborhoods close to home for inspiration.

Will Long Long Trax 2

There’ll come a day when:

…someone zooms in on Terry Crews’s nipple SO FAR [via virtual reality and ultra-K-degrees] that the areola begins to look like a planet elsewhere, in a far-off galaxy. Sweaty pockets of lakes hiding secrets of new life and technologies.

This year’s South By Southwest marks my fifth time attending the film festival and, broadly speaking, was the strongest selection of movies so far. SXSW excelled at bringing in a lot of movies written and/or directed by women, and greatly promoted a lot of “outsider” voices that broadened the narrative scope and cinematic language employed.

Mutek’s 2017 Mexico City edition had some hiccups getting off the ground. The experimental electronic music and digital arts festival had been postponed for a month due to a pair of earthquakes striking within weeks of each other. The second, registering a 7.1 on the Richter scale, hit downtown, toppling dozens of buildings, causing hundreds of deaths and inconveniencing millions with power outages. Amazingly, Mutek organizers rescheduled artists and events for Thanksgiving weekend a mere few weeks later, no doubt a complicated logistical undertaking.
