Still from MYRIAD trailer

Outside of scoring last year’s mesmerizing Good Time (our third favorite film of 2017), it feels like something close to “eternity” since we’ve heard some new Oneohtrix Point Never sounds.

Preoccupations New Material

[Jagjaguwar; 2018]

Styles: post-punk, goth rock
Others: Ought, Women, Palm

The most troubling thing about Preoccupations’ depiction of anxiety and restlessness is the implication that it can happen to anyone. Vocalist Matt Flegel’s sketches of disaffection aren’t a result of urban claustrophobia nor an affliction of youth to be aged out of; they’re indiscriminate, arbitrary heat-seeking missiles with an untraceable origin. “With a sense of urgency and unease/ Second guessing just about everything,” a heavy-lidded Flegel sings on “Anxiety,” the opening song on the band’s 2016 self-titled album.

The music published by Orange Milk, an underground behemoth of experimental music and cassette culture co-founded by Seth Graham and Keith Rankin (a.k.a. Giant Claw), feels like multiple authors contributing their stories to one sprawling space opera.

Liziuz Geschichten des Lebens

Others: techno, ambient, drone, cold november rain

Engaging with desolation should be a laughably quaint notion by now. Especially when one sees that the pursuit has competing interests, all compelled to represent this established aesthetic as innate to who they are. The recluse, with their tendency to beat the world to the punch, has no reason to share the fruits of their isolation unless they want to trade that rep in. Nonetheless, there are far more doom-intoning artisans than there is an audience for their wares.

We <3 Katamari!

Never has this been more true than today, with the announcement from Mondo that Namco’s 2004 cult classic PlayStation 2 action-puzzler Katamari Damacy is having its jazzy J-pop jingles literally PRESSED onto vinyl for the very first time. (Oh god, I hope they don’t break!)

They’ve been to the past.

They’ve been to the future.

They’ve even been all around the afterlife (probably).

And, you know? The best place to be…is here.
